Researcher.

Educator.

Clinician.

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Duke University School of Medicine and Assistant Clinical Professor in the Duke University School of Nursing.

I received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Colorado-Boulder, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I completed my pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral training at Duke University Medical Center.

Health disparities research.

A primary focus of my research is on understanding the social drivers of mental health and health decline in immigrants, with a particular focus on acculturative stress. I am interested in developing interventions to decrease acculturative stress and increase resilience in immigrants. I work with several immigrant groups, most notably Latinx individuals.

Optimizing learning methods to train culturally-conscious care

I am interested in developing and implementing strategies that can help health care professionals to develop skills in providing care that acknowledges and incorporates cultural and contextual factors into treatment so as to increase engagement, retention, and outcomes. An essential focus of this work is on paying particular attention to the intersectionality of intertwined systems of oppression and how they shape the day-to-day experiences of minoritized groups.
